Fortress Island/Asheton Isle: A Short History

fortress Island, also known as Asheton Isle lies a short distance off the Imperial coast, within easy sailing distance of New Cumana. The island is a natural fortress: steep cliffs rise from the sea on every side, while a rocky ridge dominates the center of the island. Atop that ridge stands the old stone fortress that gives the island its importance. The original fortifications were constructed generations ago to protect the coast and the approaches to New Cumana. Over the decades, the fortress passed through several hands and endured earthquakes, storms, pirate raids, and long periods of neglect. By the time of the events of Dark Horizon, much of the old fort was little more than a weathered military ruin.Five years after the events of Dark Horizon, Clara Asheton was granted possession of the island by the Imperial government. The arrangement was unusual but politically practical. Clara was permitted to restore the fortress and maintain it as a private residence and retreat, provided that the island remained available for Imperial defense.

The government formally recognized her ownership while retaining the right to call upon the fortress in time of war or national emergency.Clara accepted. She poured considerable money into restoring the old walls, towers, underground chambers and dock facilities.

Rather than turning the island into an extravagant palace, she preserved much of its character as a working fortress. Modern weapons, communications equipment and defensive systems were installed alongside the ancient stonework. The result became something uniquely Clara:a military fortress, coastal watch station, and private sanctuary all in one.

The Imperial Navy appreciates the arrangement because Asheton Isle provides an additional defensive position along the coast. Its guns can cover the surrounding waters, its signal tower can warn New Cumana of approaching vessels, and its garrison can respond to pirates, smugglers or enemy incursions.

Clara, meanwhile, uses it as her public getaway—the place she can disappear to without actually disappearing.Unlike her mysterious island somewhere in the Atlantic, there is no great secret surrounding Asheton Isle. The Imperial government knows exactly where it is. Officials know Clara owns it. Naval officers occasionally visit. Friends and associates can be invited there. And that is precisely what makes it useful.Clara can retreat from the politics and demands of her life while still remaining within the legitimate protection of the Empire.

The Garrison of Asheton Isle
The fortress maintains a permanent garrison of approximately forty Imperial soldiers. They are technically assigned to the island's defensive command rather than serving as Clara's personal bodyguard.

They are divided between:

  • Coastal artillerymen

  • Riflemen

  • Watchmen and sentries

  • Engineers

  • Signal operators

  • Dock guards

The soldiers rotate through watch posts around the island, with particular attention given to the sea approaches and the main dock.

The garrison is deliberately large enough to operate the fortress independently if Clara and her crew are absent.

  • Major Alejandro Vargas — Commanding Officer

  • Captain Sebastián Valera — Second-in-Command

  • Sergeant Mateo Rojas —
    Senior NCO

Major Vargas and Clara have a very good professional relationship.

He isn't there to serve her, and Clara doesn't expect him to. When she's on the island, he's technically the commander of the military garrison, while she is the owner.

It also reinforces why the government is comfortable with Clara possessing Asheton Isle. She's not maintaining a private army there. The Empire maintains the garrison, while Clara pays for much of the restoration and upkeep of the fortress itself.

That makes Asheton Isle a genuinely unusual Imperial institution: part military installation, part aristocratic retreat, and part personal sanctuary for Clara.

    The Civilian Staff

  • Don Esteban Morales and Doña Carmen Morale, the island —
    Caretakers

An elderly married couple who lived on the island before Clara acquired it. Esteban knows practically every tunnel, stairway, cistern and forgotten chamber in the fortress. Carmen manages the gardens and supervises much of the domestic work.

They were initially uncertain about their new mistress. Five years later, they're among the few people on the island who will casually tell Clara that she's being foolish.

    Doña Isabel Valdés — Housekeeper

The undisputed authority over Clara's household. Efficient, dignified and completely unafraid of an Imperial admiral. She keeps the residence immaculate and supervises the servants.

  • Don Tomás Herrera —
    Steward
Handles provisions, household accounts, deliveries from New Cumana and arrangements for Clara's guests. He has become exceptionally good at anticipating clara's needs which she appreciates.

  • Doña Lucía Marín —
    Cook
A superb cook originally from New Cumana. She specializes in coastal and Caribbean cuisine but has learned to prepare Clara's preferred dishes as well.

  • Diego Salazar —
    Groundskeeper
Maintains the gardens, orchards, paths and cisterns. He also tends the island's small livestock and knows the terrain better than almost anyone.

  • Javier Ortega —
    Dockmaster and Boatman
Responsible for the docks, launches and small boats. He knows the waters around Asheton Isle intimately and regularly ferries supplies and visitors between the island and New Cumana.
