THE MAPS OF THE NEW LANDS

Three centuries after the Great Calamity, the old world is gone—and new lands have risen from the sea.

Devil’s Arch is a strategic island that sits along the major trade routes between Cuba and former Mexico. The island takes its name from the enormous natural rock archway that rises between two mountain ranges on its northern side, spanning the entrance to a great inland lake.

The island was once populated by people from Tierra del Norte de los Hispanos, but was evacuated after Tierra del Sur was conquered. Today, much of the island has been reclaimed by nature. Its rugged topography is considerably different from that of the other Caribbean islands, with numerous tall, sharp mountains, forested valleys, jungle foliage, freshwater lakes, and farmland that has long since gone fallow.

On the south-western side lie the remains of the island's former settlement and its small fortress garrison. Both have fallen into disrepair, while old dirt trails still wind through the countryside along routes once used by the island's inhabitants.

Along the coast lies Dreadmoor Harbour, the island's principal port and one of the few places where civilization still maintains a foothold. The harbour serves passing vessels, traders, adventurers, and airship crews, and has developed a reputation as a rough and unpredictable outpost.

But Devil's Arch is perhaps best known for the flying contest held through the great natural archway. Pilots bring their airships to the island to test their skill and nerve, attempting to fly through the Arch at tremendous speed while navigating the mountains and the narrow passage. The challenge has become a celebrated spectacle among airship pilots—and a notoriously dangerous one. A moment of hesitation, a poorly judged turn, or a few seconds of excessive speed can send an airship crashing into the mountainside.

The island also contains a large, shallow lagoon where the wreck of an old pirate vessel rests among the coral reefs. The ship ran aground during a violent storm and has remained there ever since, becoming another of the island's many reminders of the dangers surrounding it.

Despite its abandoned settlements, Devil's Arch remains highly coveted. The Caribbean Hegemony, the Vaskran Empire, and Tierra del Norte de los Hispanos all have interests in the island, yet none has made a serious attempt to recolonize it.

For now, Devil's Arch remains an uneasy wilderness between competing powers—a forgotten island of abandoned ruins, treacherous mountains, hidden waters, and one of the most dangerous airship races in the Caribbean.
